Air Filtration: Jackson, MI
Jackson Michigan's Air Filtration Specialists
The air filtration system in your home is crucial for indoor air quality. Air filtration works when air passes through the filter screen. As the air passes through, the filter media (material) catches particulate matter such as pollen, dust, pet dander, dirt and allergens. Some types of air filters can even remove bacteria and viruses from the air.

Air Filtration Facts
Household air filters are available in two basic types: media filters, which create a physical barrier that traps minute particles, and electronic filters, which use a high-voltage charge to attract and capture contaminants. A few air filters are hybrids that combine both methods, and some include activated carbon elements to combat odor. Typically, air filters are either built into the heating and cooling system (whole house filters) or are freestanding units that can be placed in individual rooms (portable filters with self-contained fans).
Can a Dirty Air Filter Cause HVAC Problems?
Yes, a dirty air filter can cause several HVAC issues, including reduced airflow, increased energy consumption, and system overheating.
When a filter becomes clogged with dust and debris, it forces your HVAC system to work harder, leading to inefficiency and potential breakdowns. Restricted airflow can cause uneven heating or cooling, making your home less comfortable. In extreme cases, a clogged filter can cause the evaporator coil to freeze, leading to expensive repairs. A dirty filter can also allow dust to accumulate inside the system, reducing its lifespan.
Regularly changing the filter is one of the simplest ways to keep your HVAC system running efficiently and avoid costly repairs.
How Do Air Filters Work in an HVAC System?
Air filters in an HVAC system work by trapping airborne particles such as dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, and other contaminants as air passes through the system. This helps maintain indoor air quality and protects the HVAC components from dirt buildup, which can reduce efficiency and cause damage.
How They Work:
- Filtration Process – When the HVAC system pulls in air, it passes through the air filter, which captures particles based on its material and efficiency rating.
- Types of Filters:
- Fiberglass Filters – Basic filters that catch large particles but do not effectively capture smaller allergens.
- Pleated Filters – Made of cotton or polyester folds, these filters have a larger surface area to trap more particles.
- HEPA Filters – High-Efficiency Particulate Air filters that remove 99.97% of airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns.
- Electrostatic Filters – Use an electric charge to attract particles, improving efficiency.
- Activated Carbon Filters – Help remove odors and chemical contaminants in addition to particles.
- Efficiency Ratings – Filters are rated using the MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) scale, with higher numbers indicating better filtration.
- Maintenance – Regular replacement or cleaning of filters is essential to prevent airflow restriction, which can strain the HVAC system and reduce efficiency.
By keeping air clean and ensuring proper airflow, air filters help improve indoor air quality, extend HVAC system lifespan, and maintain energy efficiency.

Tips From The HVAC Professionals
Frequently Asked Questions
What Size Of HVAC System Should I have?
Contrary to what you may believe, there is no set parameter for sizing a system to the precise square footage of your home. Because homes are all built so differently, your home’s HVAC system will depend on its specific construction.
To determine the size HVAC system you need, you need to have a licensed HVAC professional from Aspen One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning evaluate your home. Our expert technicians will examine your home’s layout and make recommendations depending on your home’s individual needs. Many factors go into calculating the size of a furnace or air conditioning system your home needs. Factors include the size of your home, the number of windows in your home and which direction they face, elements surrounding your home, and expectations your family has for the comfort of your home.
With all of this information, Aspen One Hour can propose a range of energy-efficient options for perfectly heating and cooling your space all year long. Call us today for your appointment!
Can I Increase The Efficiency Of My HVAC System?
Increasing the efficiency of your home’s HVAC system can be relatively easy. Most importantly, be sure to change your filters regularly and with the Aspen Comfort Club membership, you have peace of mind knowing that your filters are replaced at your annual tune-ups! Also, make sure your thermostat is set at higher temperatures in the summer and lower temperatures in the winter. It doesn’t take the body long to adjust to incremental changes of 2-5 degrees, and these changes can save you a lot of money on your energy bills.
Lastly, you’ll want to make sure you keep blinds closed on windows that let in direct sunlight, or use curtains to shade your home while still letting in some light. Though natural light is something we all crave, keeping your blinds and curtains closed during the hottest days of the year, especially if you are not home, can drastically decrease the effort your AC system is required to make.
How Often Do I Need Maintenance On My System?
Regular maintenance on your HVAC system should be performed twice a year. The licensed professionals at Aspen One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning recommend having your system serviced in the spring before the weather heats up again, and in the fall before the weather cools down. If you’re a member of our Comfort Club, this is included in your pre-paid services along with many other services we offer.
Having regular maintenance performed on your system allows for a longer system life, higher efficiency, and proactive service to stop issues before they happen. Call us today at (517) 879-2049 to schedule your maintenance or to join our Comfort Club!
How Does A Ductless Heat Pump Work?
In older homes that either have boiler or baseboard heating, there may not have ductwork run throughout the home, making it difficult and costly to add a traditional central air conditioning system. Therefore, a ductless heat pump, sometimes called a mini-split air conditioner or a ductless air conditioner, is a cooling system that does not utilize ducts for moving treated air throughout the space. It takes warm air from one area and moving it to another. There is an outdoor compressor unit as well as air handling units indoors to allow the system to function.
The heat is transferred through the system. It goes through the cycle of evaporation and condensation. A refrigerant substance is used through a compressor pump to help achieve this cooled air. The system contains two heat exchange coils. One of those contains the necessary refrigerant material. The other works to evaporate it. This allows the refrigerant to absorb the heat from the area. This happens during the evaporation process. They work to maintain the specific temperature a person desires by using a thermostat to control the movement of the air between the coil systems. If you’re looking to upgrade your home’s comfort but don’t have ductwork, a heat pump can be an excellent option. Why Is Indoor Air Quality Important And What Can I Do To Improve It?
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) refers to the condition of the air within and around homes/buildings, especially as it relates to the health and comfort of the occupants. Good IAQ implies that the air is free from pollutants and contributes to a comfortable and safe living or working environment.
How Can I Improve My IAQ?
- Change air filters regularly
- Use air purifiers
- Ensure proper ventilation
- Control humidity levels
- Keep the living space clean and dust-free
How Often Should I Change My Filters?
Regular filter changes are vital for maintaining optimal performance. It is generally recommended to replace filters or clean reusable filters every one to three months. However, the frequency may vary based on factors like the type of filter, the level of usage, and the indoor air quality of your home.
Call Aspen One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning today to schedule your appointment to see how you can improve your air quality.
What Is The Lifespan Of An HVAC System And What Are Signs It May Need Replaced?
