Boiler Services F.A.Q.

Frequently Asked Questions

A boiler is a home heating system that works by using a fuel source, typically natural gas, oil, or electricity, to heat water.

That heated water or steam is then circulated through pipes to radiators, baseboard units, or in-floor radiant heating systems throughout the home. Unlike a forced-air furnace that heats and blows air, a boiler delivers radiant heat, which many homeowners find more comfortable and consistent since it doesn’t dry out the air or circulate dust and allergens. Boilers are common in older Michigan homes and are known for their durability and efficiency when properly maintained.

Aspen One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning has been servicing boiler systems in Jackson County and surrounding areas since 1981.

A well-maintained boiler can last 20 to 30 years, though most systems start to show meaningful efficiency losses and more frequent repair needs around the 15-year mark.

The actual lifespan depends heavily on how consistently the system has been maintained, the quality of the original installation, water quality, and how hard the system has had to work. Boilers that receive annual boiler maintenance, have their water chemistry managed, and have small issues addressed early tend to sit at the high end of that range.

Systems that have been neglected often need replacement much sooner. If your boiler is over 15 years old and has been showing signs of trouble, it’s worth getting a professional assessment from Aspen One Hour to understand where it stands.

Aspen One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning provides a full range of boiler services for homeowners throughout Jackson County and the surrounding areas.

This includes boiler repair for issues like pressure loss, leaks, strange noises, and heating failures; annual boiler maintenance to keep systems running safely and efficiently through Michigan winters; and full boiler replacement when a system has aged beyond cost-effective repair.

Our team works on hot water boilers, steam boilers, and a wide range of brands. Emergency boiler service is available 24/7 at (517) 879-2049.

Boilers and furnaces both have their strengths, and which one is more efficient depends on the specific systems being compared. Modern high-efficiency condensing boilers can achieve AFUE ratings of 90 to 98%, making them extremely fuel efficient. High-efficiency furnaces can also reach similar AFUE ratings.

The bigger difference is often in comfort rather than raw efficiency numbers. Boilers deliver radiant heat that warms objects and people directly rather than blowing heated air through ducts, which means there is no heat loss through ductwork and no issues with drafts or uneven temperatures.

For homes that already have a boiler and radiator system in place, keeping and upgrading that system is often the most cost-effective and comfortable long-term choice.

If you want to read more on the differences between a boiler and a furnace, check out or blog – Boiler vs Furnace: How to Choose the Right System.

The most common signs a boiler needs professional attention include unusual noises like banging, kettling, whistling, or gurgling; inconsistent or uneven heating throughout the home; a boiler that keeps shutting off on its own; visible water leaks or moisture around the unit; a drop in system pressure that keeps recurring; a yellow or flickering burner flame instead of a steady blue one; and a noticeable increase in energy bills without any change in usage.

Error codes on the boiler’s control panel are another clear signal that something needs to be looked at. Any of these issues should be addressed promptly, especially heading into Michigan’s heating season, to avoid a breakdown at the worst possible time.

If your boiler stops working, start with a few basic checks before calling for service.

  • Check the thermostat to make sure it is set correctly and has working batteries.
  • Look at the circuit breaker to see if the boiler’s breaker has tripped.
  • Check the pressure gauge on the boiler, since low pressure is one of the most common causes of shutdown and can sometimes be resolved by topping up the system following the manufacturer’s guidelines.
  • In winter, a frozen condensate pipe is another frequent cause of boiler shutdowns and can sometimes be thawed with warm water.

If none of those steps restore operation, or if you notice a leak, smell gas, or see a yellow flame, turn the boiler off and call Aspen One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning at (517) 879-2049. Our team is available 24/7 for emergency service.

Boilers should be professionally serviced once a year, ideally in late summer or early fall before the heating season begins in Michigan. Annual maintenance keeps the system running safely and efficiently, extends the lifespan of the equipment, and gives a technician the chance to catch small developing issues before they turn into expensive repairs or a mid-winter breakdown.
