Tips From The Air Conditioner Repair Experts
The technicians at Aspen One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning are trained in all things HVAC, including your AC system. Whether you have a central AC system, ductless system or a heat pump, our experts can diagnose and repair nearly anything that can go wrong.
Why Is My Air Conditioner Not Working?
When the heat of summer in Jackson Michigan is at its peak, you want your air conditioning system working at it’s best. However, sometimes your system is not working properly and that’s when you call Aspen One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning. Below are some reasons why your AC unit may be malfunctioning.
The Thermostat
If the thermostat isn’t working properly, the AC unit might not cool the house efficiently. Make sure you check the batteries in your programmable thermostat and ensure that it is set to the correct settings.
Refrigerant Issue
A refrigerant leak or low levels of refrigerant can prevent the AC from producing cold air. Refrigerant is a liquid that cools the unit’s coils, which then lower the temperature in the home when air is blown over them.
Bad Air Filter
Dirty or clogged air filters can cause a number of problems, including decreased airflow, lower indoor air quality, and higher power consumption. Over time, dust and other pollutants can build up in the filter and cause the unit to malfunction.
Here are some other common issues you may have:
- Electrical issues, such as a tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse
- Leaky ducts, which can make the AC work harder and reduce cooling efficiency
- Problems with the condenser or compressor
- The unit might need to be replaced, especially if it’s over 10 years old
If you’re experiencing any of these or other problems with your air conditioner, call Aspen One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning today!
What Are Some AC Repairs I Can Do Myself?
Our customers sometimes ask what types of AC repair they can do themselves. At Aspen One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning, we generally discourage DIY air conditioning repair. It can risk causing more damage or injuring yourself. Not hiring an AC professional can also void the warranty and violate building codes. However, there are simple solutions to some problems; you can also troubleshoot an issue before calling Aspen One Hour. While these tasks generally don’t fall under the category of AC repair, they can be safe and effective if your air conditioner isn’t working like it should:
Change The AC Filter
You don’t need a technician to check and change the air filter. However, a dirty filter can have a big impact on how the system works. It can reduce the amount of air going into the unit and limit how much air blows into rooms. Uneven cooling and preventable repairs are also possible. In general, we recommend changing it every one to three months.
Check the Thermostat Settings
If your home isn’t at the right temperature or is being heated instead of cooled, your AC may not need repair at all. The thermostat may be set incorrectly. Check the setting and change the temperature or fan speed if necessary, or switch it from heating to cooling mode. If the AC kicks in at the right temperature, there’s nothing else to do.
However, if the thermostat isn’t responding or doesn’t light up, change the battery (if it’s battery-operated) or call Aspen One Hour to check the wiring.
Check the Circuit Breaker
When an AC shuts off or won’t turn on, your first thought may be to call Aspen One Hour, however, the problem may not be with the air conditioner. First, go to the main electrical panel and check the circuit breaker for the AC unit. A tripped breaker will be in the middle position. If this happens, there may be an overload, especially if other appliances or lights are plugged into the same circuit as the air conditioner.
Clean the Outdoor Condenser Unit
A buildup of dust, dirt, leaves, twigs, or even shrubbery around the unit can affect how efficiently it releases heat outside. The system then can’t remove enough heat from your home. The same issue can also affect heating performance.
Fortunately, this problem is easy to fix. Use a broom, brush, or your hands to remove debris, leaves, or branches from the condenser. Also, make sure there’s no debris, obstructions, or clutter within two feet of it on each side. To clean the fan blades and condenser fins, you’ll have to open the unit; these parts can be cleaned using a garden hose on low pressure or with a soft-bristle brush.
Open Room Vents
Closing vents in unused rooms won’t save energy. Instead, it can increase air pressure in the system, which can cause serious damage. The system may also short cycle; this forces it to use more energy. If you feel your AC could work better, check all room vents and open any that are closed. Also, move any objects or furniture blocking them.
Check the Ducts
By opening the registers, you can peek into your ductwork to see if it’s dirty. Ducts can be cleaned by wiping around the edges or using a vacuum hose. If your ductwork seems excessively dirty, schedule a professional duct cleaning. Be sure to check everywhere, including the attic, where a register may have been accidentally closed, or airflow may be blocked for some other reason.
Call Aspen One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning
If these steps don’t get your AC unit to work, Aspen One Hour can help. Simple solutions often don’t require a professional. Tips From The HVAC Professionals
Frequently Asked Questions
What Size Of HVAC System Should I have?
Contrary to what you may believe, there is no set parameter for sizing a system to the precise square footage of your home. Because homes are all built so differently, your home’s HVAC system will depend on its specific construction.
To determine the size HVAC system you need, you need to have a licensed HVAC professional from Aspen One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning evaluate your home. Our expert technicians will examine your home’s layout and make recommendations depending on your home’s individual needs. Many factors go into calculating the size of a furnace or air conditioning system your home needs. Factors include the size of your home, the number of windows in your home and which direction they face, elements surrounding your home, and expectations your family has for the comfort of your home.
With all of this information, Aspen One Hour can propose a range of energy-efficient options for perfectly heating and cooling your space all year long. Call us today for your appointment!
Can I Increase The Efficiency Of My HVAC System?
Increasing the efficiency of your home’s HVAC system can be relatively easy. Most importantly, be sure to change your filters regularly and with the Aspen Comfort Club membership, you have peace of mind knowing that your filters are replaced at your annual tune-ups! Also, make sure your thermostat is set at higher temperatures in the summer and lower temperatures in the winter. It doesn’t take the body long to adjust to incremental changes of 2-5 degrees, and these changes can save you a lot of money on your energy bills.
Lastly, you’ll want to make sure you keep blinds closed on windows that let in direct sunlight, or use curtains to shade your home while still letting in some light. Though natural light is something we all crave, keeping your blinds and curtains closed during the hottest days of the year, especially if you are not home, can drastically decrease the effort your AC system is required to make.
How Often Do I Need Maintenance On My System?
Regular maintenance on your HVAC system should be performed twice a year. The licensed professionals at Aspen One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning recommend having your system serviced in the spring before the weather heats up again, and in the fall before the weather cools down. If you’re a member of our Comfort Club, this is included in your pre-paid services along with many other services we offer.
Having regular maintenance performed on your system allows for a longer system life, higher efficiency, and proactive service to stop issues before they happen. Call us today at (517) 879-2049 to schedule your maintenance or to join our Comfort Club!
How Does A Ductless Heat Pump Work?
In older homes that either have boiler or baseboard heating, there may not have ductwork run throughout the home, making it difficult and costly to add a traditional central air conditioning system. Therefore, a ductless heat pump, sometimes called a mini-split air conditioner or a ductless air conditioner, is a cooling system that does not utilize ducts for moving treated air throughout the space. It takes warm air from one area and moving it to another. There is an outdoor compressor unit as well as air handling units indoors to allow the system to function.
The heat is transferred through the system. It goes through the cycle of evaporation and condensation. A refrigerant substance is used through a compressor pump to help achieve this cooled air. The system contains two heat exchange coils. One of those contains the necessary refrigerant material. The other works to evaporate it. This allows the refrigerant to absorb the heat from the area. This happens during the evaporation process. They work to maintain the specific temperature a person desires by using a thermostat to control the movement of the air between the coil systems. If you’re looking to upgrade your home’s comfort but don’t have ductwork, a heat pump can be an excellent option. Why Is Indoor Air Quality Important And What Can I Do To Improve It?
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) refers to the condition of the air within and around homes/buildings, especially as it relates to the health and comfort of the occupants. Good IAQ implies that the air is free from pollutants and contributes to a comfortable and safe living or working environment.
How Can I Improve My IAQ?
- Change air filters regularly
- Use air purifiers
- Ensure proper ventilation
- Control humidity levels
- Keep the living space clean and dust-free
How Often Should I Change My Filters?
Regular filter changes are vital for maintaining optimal performance. It is generally recommended to replace filters or clean reusable filters every one to three months. However, the frequency may vary based on factors like the type of filter, the level of usage, and the indoor air quality of your home.
Call Aspen One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning today to schedule your appointment to see how you can improve your air quality.
What Is The Lifespan Of An HVAC System And What Are Signs It May Need Replaced?
